Summer Newsletter

Hello friends,

I write with some news and some updates.

Over the last year I’ve been keeping my head and self together with a number of different projects that have offered an outlet for working with friends and people I respect to think through the present moment and some have started manifesting, while others are stretching out into the coming seasons. Below I’ll share a few that I am excited about.

As has been widely reported formally and informally, education in the pandemic was challenging for all involved. That said, at Moore College of Art & Design where I just finished my 7th year as Graduate Program Director and Assistant Professor of Socially-Engaged Art – the students and faculty managed to make some really incredible projects happen. Some special class projects over the last year have included the collaboration Care Crisis and the publication Beyond Green and a recent partnership with Movement Alliance Project. I am also really proud of all our alumni are doing and while there is too much to list in one place but this recent newsletter of some activities captures a bit.

I was also able to host some virtual public programs which you can see on this archive https://conversationsarchive.wordpress.com/ which include many great events from the past, and several from this last year including Anne Basting developed with Jefferson University’s Health & Humanities program, Alicia Grullon in dialogue with Laura Raicovich, Grupo de Arte Callejero and Solana Chehtman developed in collaboration with A Blade of Grass and Printed Matter, and a program in collaboration with Monique Scott from Bryn Mawr’s Museum Studies program featuring James Claiborne, Brittany Webb, and Tukufu Zuberi.

Besides the Moore related news, there are a few videos and links from other recent events I want to share, including:

And then a few publication links:

  • Last Fall I got to guest-edit an issue of A Blade of Grass magazine https://abladeofgrass.org/magazine/ featuring Grupo De Arte Callejero, Arthur Jones with Michael Premo, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Denechia Powell-Twagirumukiza, Amita Swadhin, and Carol Zou. The ABOG publications team of Sabrina Chin, Kathryn McKinney, Karina Muranaga, and Prerana Reddy were a pleasure to work with on this!
  • Early this year the dialogue I conducted with Cassie Fennell in 2015 called Displacemaking was updated in 2020 and is now featured in the book “The Routledge Handbook of Placemaking.”
  • And finally, I’ve been happy to be able to connect with people through virtual programs and speaking engagements this last year. Those have included a dialogue with Michelle Angela Ortiz for Fleisher Art Memorial in October, serving as a panelist at The Northeast Modern Language Association for “In Their Words: The Interview as Research and Practice” in March 2021 which will be restaged next December at Visible Evidence in Frankfurt, and then two panels where I shared the Care Crisis project with student co-presenters at the College Art Association on “Designed by Quarantine: Space and Place in the Current Global Crisis” [Online] in February 202, and at the AMPS (Architecture Media Politics Society) conference ‘Online Education: Teaching in a Time of Change’ [Online] in April 2021.

Please keep in touch and I’m hoping you are safe amidst it all. If you’ve got any resources to share please consider donating to http://215pa.com/peoples-kitchen/ where I am a “solidarity worker” delivering meals.

In Tandem,

Daniel
